Dehydration Lines vs Wrinkles: How to Tell the Difference

Fine lines under your eyes are not always wrinkles. Here is how to tell the difference, and what to do about it.

Dehydration lines are a temporary surface condition caused by water loss. Wrinkles are a structural change, the result of collagen and elastin breaking down over time. They can look almost identical in the mirror, particularly under the eyes, but they are not the same thing and they do not need the same solution.

Here is the reassuring part, and it is worth leading with: most people who think they are watching early wrinkles appear are actually looking at dehydrated skin. This page will help you work out which one you have, starting with a test you can do in the next thirty seconds.

What Dehydration Lines Actually Are

Dehydration lines are fine, shallow lines that form at the surface of the skin when it is not holding enough water. They sit in the uppermost layers. Nothing underneath has changed, no collagen has been lost, and no permanent structural damage has occurred. That is the single most important thing to understand about them.

They have a distinctive look once you know what you are searching for. Dehydration lines are fine and crinkly, closer to crumpled tissue paper or a light cross-hatching than to a single carved crease. They have no real depth and no defined edges. They also shift through the day, which is the giveaway. Sharper first thing in the morning, softer after a hydrating serum, worse again after a long commute in the cold or an afternoon under air conditioning.

The mechanism behind them is called Trans-Epidermal Water Loss, or TEWL. Your skin barrier is designed to hold water in, and when it is working properly it does this quietly and constantly in the background. When that barrier is compromised, water evaporates from the surface faster than it can be replaced. The result is a dry, tight, crinkly surface that catches the light and reads as lines. They show up in predictable places. Under the eyes first, almost always, because that skin is the thinnest on the face at roughly 0.5mm compared with around 2mm on the cheeks, with the fewest oil glands and the least structural support beneath it. The forehead is next, thanks to constant exposure to wind, cold, central heating and air conditioning. Cheeks and the area around the mouth follow, particularly in low humidity or after skincare that has disrupted the barrier.

None of this is permanent, and none of it is a sign that your skin is ageing prematurely. Dehydration lines are a condition your skin is currently in, not a stage it has permanently entered. Which raises the obvious question: how do you know for certain that is what you are looking at?

The Pinch Test: How to Check Your Skin at Home

There is a simple skin dehydration test you can do right now, with no equipment and no appointment. It takes seconds and it is genuinely useful.

Gently take a small section of skin between your thumb and forefinger. Do not squeeze hard, and do not pull. Apply just enough pressure to lift the skin slightly away from the surface beneath it. Hold for a second, then release, and watch closely what happens next.

A positive result looks like this. The skin stays slightly tented or crinkled for a moment before settling back down. As you apply that gentle pressure, the existing lines crinkle and multiply, fanning out into a fine web rather than staying as they were. Dehydrated skin behaves a little like fabric — it creases, holds the crease briefly, then relaxes.

A negative result is just as clear. True wrinkles do not change under pressure. They have a fixed depth and a set shape, and pinching the skin does not multiply them or make new ones appear. The crease stays exactly the same crease. If you pinch and nothing happens except that the same line sits there unchanged, you are most likely looking at a structural line.

The best places to run the pinch test are the cheeks and directly under the eyes, where the contrast between the two results is most obvious. The forehead works too, though the skin there is more mobile and slightly harder to read.

There is a second, more reliable version of this test, and it is the one we would actually trust. Run the pinch test today and note what you see. Then commit to two to four weeks of consistent, barrier-focused hydration, morning and night, without skipping. Run it again at the end. If the lines have visibly softened, you have your answer, and it is dehydration.

That second test works because of one behavioural difference between the two, which is worth spelling out properly.

Dehydration Lines vs Wrinkles: The Differences That Matter

Cause. Dehydration lines come from a water deficiency and impaired water retention — the skin cannot hold on to what it has. Wrinkles come from the breakdown of collagen and elastin over time, driven by age, cumulative UV exposure and repeated muscle movement in the same direction, year after year.

Appearance. Dehydration lines are fine, shallow, cross-hatched and diffuse. They spread across an area rather than sitting in one place. Wrinkles are deeper and more defined, with set edges, and they tend to follow the patterns your facial muscles have carved over decades.

Behaviour. This is the most useful difference of all. Dehydration lines change with hydration. Wrinkles do not. Everything else is interpretation; this one is close to a rule.

Permanence. Dehydration lines are fully reversible. Restore the water and repair the barrier, and they go. Wrinkles are structural and permanent, although their appearance can be meaningfully improved with the right approach.

Who gets them. Dehydration is a condition, not a skin type, and that distinction matters. Oily skin can be dehydrated at the same time — plenty of water in short supply while oil production carries on regardless. If you are unsure what your skin type is, start there, but do not assume oily means hydrated. Wrinkles, by contrast, develop with age and cumulative exposure.

Location overlap. Both appear under the eyes, which is exactly why this area causes the most confusion. The tell is in the texture. Diffuse and crinkly across the whole area points to dehydration. Set creases that are visible even when your face is completely at rest point to something structural.

One quick note on ingredients before we move on. Hyaluronic acid is the humectant for dehydration, because it binds water into the surface layers where the problem is. On its own it has little effect on structural wrinkles, because a lack of water is not what caused them.

So if dehydration is the answer for most people, what is putting it there in the first place?

What Causes Dehydration Lines

A compromised skin barrier. This is the root cause in the majority of cases. When the barrier is weakened, TEWL increases, the surface dries out, and lines appear. Environmental triggers. Cold, wind, low humidity, central heating and air conditioning all pull moisture from the skin’s surface. This is why dehydration lines flare in winter, why they appear after a long flight, and why they can arrive suddenly when the heating goes on for the season. Your skin has not changed; its environment has.

Lifestyle. Alcohol is dehydrating and shows on the face quickly. Poor sleep reduces the skin’s overnight recovery window. Ongoing stress affects barrier function too. None of these are moral failings, but all three are worth recognising when lines appear out of nowhere.

The water myth. Drinking more water alone will not fix dehydration lines. Stay hydrated because it is good for you, but do not expect it to resolve surface dehydration, because this is a topical and barrier issue. Skin needs the right ingredients applied directly to it, not simply more fluid passing through the body.

Over-cleansing and harsh cleansers. Every wash with something stripping removes protective lipids along with the dirt. Cleanse twice a day if you need to, but cleanse gently.

Over-exfoliation and actives without barrier support. Vitamin C and exfoliating acids are genuinely worthwhile ingredients, and we are not going to tell you to drop them. But used frequently without hydration and barrier support alongside them, they can tip skin into dehydration. Pair them with niacinamide and humectants rather than running them alone. Skipping moisturiser. Hydrating without sealing leaves the surface unprotected, and the water you have just applied evaporates away. The moisturiser is not the optional step.

The encouraging thing about that list is how much of it sits within your control.

How to Get Rid of Dehydration Lines

The governing principle is simple: attract water into the skin, then seal it in. Both steps are needed, and neither works properly alone.

Ectoin is the hero here. It is a naturally occurring molecule produced by microorganisms that survive in genuinely hostile environments — extreme salt, drought and heat. It works by forming protective hydration shells around skin cells, which reduces TEWL and supports barrier function. A 2022 systematic review published in Dermatology and Therapy describes this mechanism directly, noting that ectoine forms a water shell around cellular proteins and that this is associated with reduced transepidermal water loss. What makes it unusual is that it works protectively as well as correctively, helping skin resist dehydration rather than only repairing it afterwards. Hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Both are humectants, meaning they bind water and hold it in the upper layers of the skin, restoring plumpness and softening the crinkled surface texture. The routine. One tight sequence, morning and night.

  1. Cleanse gently, with nothing stripping.
