As we age, our skin changes, and that's completely normal. Fine lines, a loss of bounce, and changes in tone and texture are signs that skin is maturing, not signs that something's gone wrong. This guide breaks down what's actually happening beneath the surface, how to tell mature skin apart from other skin types, and how to build a routine with ingredients that are proven to help. If you're also noticing dryness or sensitivity alongside signs of ageing, our guides to dry skin and sensitive skin are worth reading alongside this one.
Quick Facts About Mature Skin
What is it?
Skin that shows visible signs of natural ageing, including fine lines, reduced firmness, uneven tone and dryness, caused by a gradual decline in collagen, elastin and skin cell turnover.
Who gets it?
Everyone, eventually. Most people start noticing signs of maturing skin from their late 20s onward, with more visible changes from the mid-30s and through perimenopause and menopause
Common signs
Fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness and bounce, dullness, uneven skin tone, dryness, and slower skin recovery.
Can it be managed?
Yes. While you can't stop the ageing process, the right ingredients and routine can visibly support firmness, smoothness and hydration
Where to start
A routine built around retinoids, exosomes and ceramides, with SPF as a non-negotiable daily step.
Our top pick
Starter Retinol Serum - £13 Advanced Retinal Serum - £18
Key Reminders at a Glance:
- Mature skin is a natural stage, not a flaw — everyone experiences it over time
- Common signs include fine lines, loss of firmness, dullness and uneven tone
- Retinoids (start with Starter Retinol Serum, progress to Advanced Retinal Serum) and exosomes are two of the most effective ingredient categories
- Hydration and barrier support (hyaluronic acid, ceramides) matter just as much as active ingredients
- SPF is non-negotiable — unprotected sun exposure accelerates visible ageing
- Results take weeks, not days — consistency beats intensity
- Don't forget the eye and neck area, they often show signs of ageing first
What is Mature Skin?
Mature skin isn't a flaw, it's a natural stage that all skin goes through. As we get older, our skin produces less collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for keeping skin firm and bouncy. Skin cell turnover also slows down, which can make skin look duller and feel rougher. At the same time, oil production often decreases, which is why mature skin can feel drier than it used to, and can start to overlap with the signs described in our dry skin guide.
Key terms explained:
- Collagen: A protein that gives skin its structure and firmness. Production naturally declines with age.
- Elastin: A protein that allows skin to stretch and bounce back. Like collagen, elastin production slows over time.
- Cell turnover: The process of old skin cells shedding and new ones forming. This slows with age, which can lead to dullness.
- Exosomes: Tiny messengers naturally found in skin that help cells communicate, playing a role in skin repair and renewal.
- Glycation: A process where sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin, making them stiffer and less effective over time.
Mature Skin Vs Dry Skin
It's easy to confuse mature skin with dry skin, since both can feel tight and look dull. Here's how to tell them apart:
| Mature Skin | Dry Skin | |
|---|---|---|
| Main Cause | Declining collagen, elastin and cell turnover | Lack of oil (sebum) and/or water in the skin |
| Key Signs | Fine lines, loss of firmness and uneven tone | Flakiness, tightness and rough texture |
| Can They Overlap? | Yes, mature skin often becomes drier too | Dry skin can occur at any age |
| Key Ingredients | Retinoids, exosomes and Vitamin C | Hyaluronic Acid, ceramides and squalane |
Many people experience both at once, which is why a mature skin routine should also address hydration and barrier support. Read our full guide to dry skin for more detail on managing dryness specifically, or sensitive skin if your skin also reacts easily.
What Causes Skin to Mature?
1. Intrinsic ageing
This is the natural, genetically-programmed ageing process that happens over time regardless of lifestyle, driven by a gradual decline in collagen and elastin production.
2. UV exposure (photoageing)
Unprotected sun exposure is one of the biggest accelerators of visible skin ageing, breaking down collagen and contributing to fine lines, dark spots and uneven texture.
3. Hormonal changes
Hormonal shifts, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, can lead to a noticeable drop in collagen and increased dryness.
4. Lifestyle factors
Sleep, diet, stress and smoking can all influence how quickly visible signs of ageing appear. Our skin longevity blog goes deeper into the lifestyle side of long-term skin health.
5. Environmental stressors
Pollution and environmental aggressors can contribute to oxidative stress, which affects how skin ages over time.
The Best Ingredients for Mature Skin
Retinoids (Retinol & Retinal)
Retinoids are among the most well-studied ingredients for supporting the appearance of fine lines and uneven texture. They work by speeding up cell turnover and helping to support collagen production. If you're new to retinoids, start with our Starter Retinol Serum; if you've built tolerance, our Advanced Retinal Serum offers a more potent next step.
Exosomes
Exosomes are an advanced, innovative skincare ingredient that help support skin's natural communication and repair processes, making them a powerful addition to a mature skin routine focused on radiance and firmness.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C helps visibly brighten and even out skin tone while also supporting collagen, making it a strong partner for dullness and uneven texture.
Hyaluronic Acid
As skin matures, it often loses its ability to hold onto water. Hyaluronic acid helps draw moisture into the skin, supporting a plumper, smoother appearance.
Ceramides
Ceramides are lipids that occur naturally in skin and help maintain the skin barrier. As ceramide levels drop with age, replenishing them helps support smoother, stronger-looking skin, this is especially important if your skin also leans dry (see our dry skin guide).
At a glance:
| Ingredient | Best For | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Retinoids | Fine lines, texture and renewal | PM only |
| Exosomes | Radiance, repair and firmness | AM or PM |
| Vitamin C | Brightening, dullness and uneven tone | AM |
| Hyaluronic Acid | Hydration and plumpness | AM & PM |
| Ceramides | Barrier support and dryness | AM & PM |
What to avoid: Over-exfoliating mature skin can compromise an already-slower-to-recover barrier. Introduce retinoids gradually (our best anti-ageing routine blog has a full step-by-step), and always pair with SPF during the day.
How To Build A Routine For Mature Skin?
AM Routine:
- Cleanse with Hydrating Cream to Milk Cleanser
- Apply 15% Vitamin C + EGF Serum
- Layer Hyaluronic Acid Serum
- Moisturise with Bio Active Ceramide Moisturiser
- Don't forget Bio Active Neck Stick for the neck area
- Finish with Dewy Sunscreen SPF 30
PM Routine:
- Cleanse with Oat Cleansing Balm
- Apply Exosome Serum
- Follow with Starter Retinol Serum (2-3 nights per week to start) or Advanced Retinal Serum if more experienced
- Moisturise with Bio Active Ceramide Moisturiser
- Treat the eye area with Bio Active Ceramide Eye Cream or Caffeine Eye Cream
By sub-type:
- Mature + Dry: Prioritise ceramides and hyaluronic acid, introduce retinoids slowly (full detail in our dry skin guide)
- Mature + Sensitive: Start with the Starter Retinol Serum just once a week, pair with barrier-supporting ceramides (see sensitive skin guide)
- Mature + Uneven tone: Add Vitamin C in the AM alongside your retinoid routine at night
Pro tip: Consistency matters more than intensity. Visible results from retinoids and exosomes build over weeks, not days, our best anti-ageing skincare routine blog has a full week-by-week breakdown.
Common Myths & Mistakes
"Retinoids are too harsh for mature skin."
Not true, when introduced gradually. Starting with the Starter Retinol Serum 2-3 nights a week allows skin to build tolerance before progressing to something like the Advanced Retinal Serum.
"You only need anti-ageing products once you see wrinkles."
Prevention works better than correction. Read when should I start using anti-ageing products for a full breakdown by age and skin stage.
"Natural ageing can be stopped completely."
No ingredient can stop the ageing process entirely, but the right routine can visibly support firmness, tone and texture. Our skin longevity blog covers what's realistic to expect.
