Great question! The terms are often used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences. "Face wash" typically refers to gel or foam cleansers, whilst "cleanser" is broader - including cream cleansers, cleansing balms, and oil cleansers. In the UK, we tend to use "cleanser" more broadly for any product that cleanses your face.
A cleansing balm is an oil-based cleanser that starts solid and melts into an oil when massaged onto skin. They're brilliant for removing makeup, SPF, and daily grime whilst nourishing your skin. Perfect as the first step in double cleansing or on their own for dry/sensitive skin.
Oily/Acne-prone: Salicylic acid cleansers help control breakouts Dry/Sensitive: Cream cleansers or cleansing balms provide gentle nourishment Combination: Gentle gel cleansers, or alternate between different formulas Mature skin: Cleansing balms help maintain skin barrier function
Double cleansing involves using an oil-based cleanser (like our Oat Cleansing Balm) followed by a water-based cleanser. It's particularly popular in K-beauty and ensures thorough removal of makeup, SPF, and pollution - especially important if you live in a city or wear makeup daily.
Most people benefit from cleansing twice daily - morning to refresh and evening to remove the day's buildup. However, if you have very dry or sensitive skin, you might find cleansing just once in the evening works better, with a simple water rinse in the morning.
Avoid harsh sulfates (like SLS) if you have sensitive or dry skin, as they can strip your natural oils. Also be cautious of heavily fragranced products. Look for gentle, pH-balanced formulas with nourishing ingredients instead.
Whilst makeup wipes are convenient for emergencies, they're not ideal for daily use. They don't thoroughly cleanse and can be harsh on skin from the rubbing motion. A proper cleanser will remove more impurities whilst being gentler on your skin barrier.
Take your time! Massage for 60-90 seconds to allow the cleanser to properly break down makeup, SPF, and impurities. This also helps the active ingredients work effectively and can be quite relaxing as part of your evening routine.
