Blackheads form when a pore fills with excess oil and dead skin cells. The plug sits open at the surface, and when it meets the air it oxidises and turns dark. They are not trapped dirt, which is why washing more often does not clear them. Oily and blemish-prone skin tends to see them most, usually across the nose, chin and forehead.
Blackheads are pores blocked with oxidised oil and dead skin, and they sit slightly raised above the surface. Sebaceous filaments are a normal part of how your skin works, small greyish dots that line the pore and help move oil to the surface. Everyone has them, mostly on the nose. They cannot be removed permanently, only kept clear.
Both are clogged pores. A blackhead is open at the surface, so the contents oxidise and darken. A whitehead is sealed over, so it stays pale or flesh coloured. Same blockage, different exposure to air. Salicylic acid works on both because it clears the pore from the inside rather than just the surface.
Closed comedones are clogged pores sealed under the skin, showing up as small flesh-coloured bumps with no visible opening. They take longer to clear than blackheads because there is no exit route. Salicylic acid works inside the pore rather than only on the surface, so it suits them well. Give it a full turnover cycle before judging.
Use one exfoliating step, not three. Salicylic acid is oil soluble, so it works inside the pore rather than only on top of it. Start two or three times a week and build up as your skin adjusts. The nose has larger, more active oil glands, so congestion returns there faster than anywhere else. Keep it simple and consistent rather than intensive. A salicylic acid cleanser used regularly does more than occasional aggressive sessions. Expect maintenance rather than a permanent fix, because the pores themselves do not change size.
They remove the very top of the plug and leave the rest behind. The friction also inflames surrounding skin, which can make pores look larger over time. Chemical exfoliation clears the pore contents properly without damaging the surface. Physical scrubbing and stripping is the most common reason congestion comes back worse.
Squeezing pushes some of the contents deeper and can rupture the pore wall, which turns a simple blockage into an inflamed spot that may leave a mark. Nails also introduce bacteria. If something is close to the surface, a warm compress and gentle pressure with clean hands is the limit. Anything that resists should be left alone.
Not in the same routine when you are starting out. Alternate them on separate nights and keep a recovery night in between. Once your skin has adjusted over several weeks you can shorten the gap. You can keep them in check, but pore size and oil production are largely set by genetics, so this is maintenance rather than a cure.
