Ceramides are your skin's most important structural ingredient - and most people have no idea they exist. These naturally occurring lipids make up the foundation of your skin barrier, acting as the glue that holds your skin cells together and keeps moisture locked firmly in place.

When ceramide levels drop - and they do, whether through ageing, environmental damage, or simply using the wrong skincare - everything starts to fall apart. Skin feels dry and tight. Fine lines become more visible. Sensitivity increases. The barrier that was silently doing its job all along is no longer doing it well enough. And it's not just your face. Your neck, jawline and décolletage are made of the same ceramide-dependent skin - and they age faster, with less protection, and far less attention.

The good news? You can restore it. All of it. Here's everything you need to know about ceramides, what they do for your skin, and the products that actually deliver visible results - from your forehead to your chest.

What they do

Ceramides are a family of lipid molecules that occur naturally in your skin. They're not a trend, a buzzword, or a synthetic invention - they are a fundamental component of what your skin is actually made of. In fact, ceramides make up approximately 50% of the lipid content in the outermost layer of your skin, known as the stratum corneum.

Think of your skin like a brick wall. Your skin cells are the bricks, and ceramides are the mortar - the material that fills the gaps between them, holds everything together, and creates an impermeable seal. Without enough ceramide mortar, the wall crumbles. Water escapes. Irritants, pollutants and bacteria get in. Skin feels dry, reactive and unprotected.

This barrier function is not a cosmetic concern - it's a fundamental health concern. A strong, ceramide-rich barrier is the difference between skin that handles everything the day throws at it and skin that constantly feels one step away from a reaction.

The Science Behind Ceramides

Ceramides work as part of a three-component lipid system alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids. Together, these form a lamellar structure - organised layers of lipids that sit between skin cells and create the skin's waterproofing system.

This structure is maintained naturally when you're young, but ceramide levels decline significantly with age. By your 30s, ceramide production begins to slow. By your 50s, levels may have dropped considerably - which is one of the primary reasons why skin becomes drier, thinner and more prone to fine lines and sensitivity as we get older.

Environmental stressors accelerate this process further. Harsh cleansers, over-exfoliation, pollution, UV exposure - and increasingly, the physical habits of modern life, such as constantly looking down at screens (what skincare experts are calling "tech neck") - all compromise ceramide levels and damage the barrier, regardless of age.

Types of Ceramides in Skincare

Not all ceramides are the same. There are multiple types, each with a slightly different role in the skin barrier:

Want to understand the difference between Bio-Active and standard ceramides in more detail? Read our deep-dive: Bio-Active Ceramides vs Regular Ceramides →

Barrier Repair and Strengthening

The single most important function of ceramides is barrier repair. When your skin barrier is compromised - whether from over-exfoliation, harsh products, environmental damage or natural ceramide depletion - the consequences show up quickly. Redness, tightness, increased sensitivity and dehydration are all classic signs of a barrier in distress.

Ceramides restore the structural integrity of the barrier from the very first use. In clinical testing, our Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser was proven to strengthen the skin barrier from first use. Not after a week. Not after a month. From the first application.

Long-Lasting Hydration

Ceramides don't hydrate the skin the way hyaluronic acid does. HA attracts water molecules from the environment and pulls them into the skin. Ceramides do something different and equally essential - they lock that water in.

Without a strong ceramide barrier, water evaporates from the skin continuously through a process called transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Restoring your ceramide levels dramatically reduces TEWL, keeping skin plumper and more comfortable for longer. Our Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser is clinically proven to deliver 24-hour hydration. Our Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick is clinically proven to deeply hydrate the neck area - where skin is thinner, more vulnerable, and loses moisture faster.

Visibly Reduces 6 Signs of Ageing

This is where Bio-Active Ceramides go well beyond traditional barrier repair. In a 4-week clinical study of 20 people, 100% saw a clinically proven improvement in 6 signs of ageing: fine lines, wrinkles, plumpness, firmness, lift, elasticity and barrier function.

In a separate 12-week independent clinical study, Bio-Active Ceramides delivered up to 4x visible fine line and wrinkle reduction compared to standard ceramide formulations*.

Targets Tech Neck and Neck Lines

The neck is one of the most neglected areas in skincare - and one of the first to show visible signs of ageing. The skin on the neck is thinner than facial skin, produces less oil, has fewer sebaceous glands, and is subjected to constant movement and stretching throughout the day. Add to that the modern habit of looking down at phones and screens for hours at a time - creating repetitive creasing of neck skin - and you have a recipe for premature horizontal neck lines and crepey texture. This is what's becoming widely known as "tech neck."

Ceramides - specifically Bio-Active Ceramide NP - address tech neck and neck lines at their structural root: a depleted, weakened skin barrier that can no longer retain moisture or resist the physical forces causing those lines to form and deepen.

Suitable for All Skin Types

Because ceramides occur naturally in the skin, the body recognises and accepts them readily - which is why adverse reactions are exceptionally rare.

Ceramides are one of the most versatile skincare ingredients. They work both as a foundational step and as a protective seal - which is why they appear in cleansers, moisturisers and targeted treatments, and why each application serves a distinct purpose.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Morning Routine:

  1. Cleanse - Oat Cleansing Balm (ceramide-rich first cleanse; protects your barrier as it cleanses)
  2. Hydrate - apply a hydrating serum such as Hyaluronic Acid Serum to damp skin
  3. Targeted treatments - vitamin C, niacinamide, or other serums
  4. Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser - apply a blueberry-sized amount to face, neck and décolletage to seal all previous layers and strengthen barrier
  5. Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick (if using as targeted neck treatment) - glide across jawline, neck and décolletage after the moisturiser; the built-in gua sha head massages product in while lifting and sculpting
  6. SPF 30+ - always the final step in your AM routine

Evening Routine:

  1. First cleanse - Oat Cleansing Balm to dissolve makeup, SPF and the day's buildup
  2. Second cleanse (optional) - follow with a water-based cleanser for a thorough double cleanse
  3. Hydrate - Hyaluronic Acid Serum on damp skin
  4. Active treatments - retinol or acids (apply before the moisturiser)
  5. Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser - final step; seals in all previous layers and supports overnight barrier repair
  6. Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick - glide across neck, jawline and chest; the stick formula allows precise, targeted application with the integrated gua sha massager

Using the Neck Lift Stick: Technique Matters

Our Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick is unlike any other ceramide product in the INKEY range. It features a built-in gua sha massager head that doesn't just deliver the formula - it physically stimulates the skin as it applies, boosting circulation and lymphatic drainage while the Bio-Active Ceramide NP, Retinol and Bakuchiol get to work underneath.

Technique:

  • Start at the collarbone and sweep upwards towards the jaw in long, firm strokes
  • Work from the centre of the neck outwards
  • Glide along the jawline from chin to ear on both sides
  • Use morning and/or evening - consistent daily use delivers the best results
  • Can be used over the Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser for a double ceramide hit on the neck

How Much to Use

Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser: A blueberry-sized amount for face, neck and décolletage, morning and evening.

Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick: Glide 2–3 strokes across neck and décolletage, morning and/or evening.

Oat Cleansing Balm: A raspberry-sized amount onto dry skin; emulsify with warm water and rinse.

Ceramides vs Hyaluronic Acid

This is the most important pairing in skincare, and it perfectly illustrates why ingredient knowledge matters. These two ingredients do fundamentally different jobs - and they're better together than either is alone.

Hyaluronic acid acts as a powerful humectant: it draws water from the environment and deeper skin layers to the surface, creating immediate plumpness and dewy skin. Ceramides then seal that hydration in, reinforcing the barrier so water can't escape.

Think of it this way: hyaluronic acid fills the glass of water. Ceramides are the glass itself. Use HA first on damp skin, then seal immediately with your ceramide moisturiser. That sequence - hydrate then seal - is the foundation of INKEY's Moisture Sandwich method.

Ceramides vs Retinol

No conflict here - in fact, this is one of the most powerful double acts in anti-ageing skincare. And it's a pairing that's been built directly into our Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick, which combines Bio-Active Ceramide NP with both Retinol and Bakuchiol in a single targeted formula.

For the face: apply retinol first in your PM routine, then layer Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser on top. The ceramides buffer any potential irritation while both ingredients work together on anti-ageing goals.

For the neck: the Neck Lift Stick does this work for you - ceramides, retinol and bakuchiol in one precisely targeted stick.

Ceramides vs Peptides

Ceramides and peptides address different aspects of skin health and ageing - and work even better when combined.

Can You Use Ceramides with Other Actives?

Yes - ceramides are one of the most compatible skincare ingredients available. There are no known conflicts with other skincare actives.

  • With Vitamin C (AM): Use vitamin C first, then Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser to seal antioxidant protection in place
  • With Retinol (PM): Apply retinol first, ceramide moisturiser last - the ideal buffer-and-boost combination
  • With Niacinamide: Perfect pairing; niacinamide supports barrier function and sits easily beneath the ceramide moisturiser
  • With AHAs/BHAs: Ceramides help restore the barrier after exfoliation - an essential follow-up step on exfoliation nights

bio active neck lift stick

Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick
£15.00 | 17g

Best for: Neck lines · Tech neck · Crepey neck skin · Jawline definition · Décolletage · All skin types

Your neck ages differently - and it needs different skincare to match.

The skin on your neck is thinner than your face, produces less oil, and is subjected to constant movement, stretching and - increasingly - the repetitive downward gaze of screen use. These factors combine to create horizontal neck lines, crepey texture and loss of definition along the jawline faster than almost anywhere else on the body. Standard face moisturisers, applied occasionally to the neck as an afterthought, simply aren't built for this. Our Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick is. Formulated specifically for the neck, jawline and décolletage, this targeted stick combines the same Bio-Active Ceramide NP as the hero moisturiser - for deep, multi-layer barrier repair - with Retinol and Bakuchiol to visibly firm and reduce horizontal neck lines, and a built-in gua sha massager head that physically lifts and sculpts while delivering the formula. The result: visibly firmer, smoother, more defined neck skin with consistent use.

Why it works:

  • Bio-Active Ceramide NP - the same next-generation ceramide as the hero moisturiser; penetrates multiple skin layers to strengthen the neck's barrier, deeply hydrate and visibly reduce fine lines and neck lines
  • Built-in Gua Sha Massager Head - physically stimulates circulation and lymphatic drainage as it applies, boosting product absorption while lifting and sculpting the jawline and neck

How to use:

Glide the stick upwards across the neck and décolletage in long, firm strokes from collarbone to jaw. Sweep along the jawline from chin to ear. Use morning and/or evening, after moisturiser. The integrated gua sha head works the formula in as you apply.

INKEY Tip: For extra barrier support, use alongside the Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser — apply the moisturiser first, then layer the Neck Lift Stick on top for a double-ceramide hit on the neck and décolletage.

Suitable for:

All skin types · Sensitive skin

Ceramide Type is Everything

The ceramide type in your product determines whether it simply sits on the surface or genuinely changes your skin.

What to look for: Standard ceramides are effective for barrier support. Bio-Active Ceramides are clinically proven to go further - delivering visible skin-changing results rather than just protective maintenance. If anti-ageing is a concern alongside barrier repair, Bio-Active is the upgrade worth making.

Supporting Ingredients to Look For

The best ceramide formulations surround ceramides with ingredients that enhance their effectiveness:

  • Glycerin - a powerful humectant that works in synergy with ceramides to attract and hold moisture
  • Shea Butter - nourishes deeply and contributes to the occlusive layer that locks hydration in (Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser)
  • Omega Fatty Acids (3, 6 & 9) - found in the Oat Cleansing Balm; reinforce the barrier and support ceramide function from the cleansing step
  • Peptides - signal collagen and elastin production; combined with ceramides, a powerful anti-ageing duo

Avoid: Products with high concentrations of alcohol as a primary ingredient, which can counteract ceramides' barrier-repairing work.

Choosing the Right Ceramide Format for Your Concern

Are Ceramides Safe?

Ceramides are among the safest ingredients in skincare. Because they are naturally found in human skin, topical application is exceptionally well tolerated across all ages and skin types:

  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women - our Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser, Bio-Active Neck Stick and Oat Cleansing Balm are confirmed safe throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Sensitive skin and skin conditions - suitable for rosacea, eczema-prone and reactive skin; all three products are dermatologically tested
  • All ages - from teenagers (Oat Cleansing Balm) to mature adults
  • Alongside all skincare actives - ceramides are compatible with vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, niacinamide and more
  • Daily use, morning and evening - no risk of over-application or sensitisation from ceramides

Potential Side Effects

Adverse reactions to ceramides specifically are extremely rare. In the unlikely event of any skin reaction when starting a new ceramide product, it is almost always attributable to another ingredient in the formula rather than the ceramide itself. As with any new skincare product, patch testing is always recommended. Learn more about patch testing here →

Application Technique

  • Apply our Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser to clean, post-cleansing skin - slightly warm skin from the cleansing step aids absorption
  • Use gentle upward motions on the face; draw the cream down and across the neck and décolletage
  • Apply a blueberry-sized amount - this covers face, neck and décolletage comfortably
  • Follow immediately with our Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick on the neck, jawline and décolletage - the gua sha head works the ceramide formula in while physically lifting and stimulating the skin
  • Allow 30–60 seconds before applying SPF or makeup; 91% of users confirm no pilling when properly layered***

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Stopping your routine at your jawline - your neck and décolletage have the same ceramide-dependent skin as your face, and they age faster. Take every product down to your chest
  • Skipping ceramides when using actives - strong actives like retinol and acids increase the need for barrier support, not decrease it. Ceramides belong in your routine on your most active nights
  • Using the wrong cleanser first - a barrier-stripping cleanser can undo the work of even the best ceramide moisturiser. Start your routine right with the ceramide-rich Oat Cleansing Balm
  • Being inconsistent - barrier repair builds over time. Visible anti-ageing results from Bio-Active Ceramides are clinically proven in 28 days - but only with consistent daily use. Use every morning and evening
  • Ignoring tech neck - if you're on a screen for more than 2 hours a day, your neck is experiencing repetitive creasing. Targeted ceramide treatment with the Neck Lift Stick is the specific solution

Climate Considerations

  • Dry or cold climates: Layer HA serum underneath the ceramide moisturiser - HA draws moisture in, ceramides hold it there. Don't skip the Neck Lift Stick in cold weather; neck skin is particularly prone to dryness
  • Central heating / air conditioning: Both strip moisture from the skin and accelerate ceramide depletion. Use all ceramide products AM and PM without exception
  • Humid climates: The Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser's non-greasy velvety texture performs well in warmer, more humid conditions

At INKEY, every claim is supported by data. Our Bio-Active Ceramide range is our most clinically tested - and the results speak for themselves.

Bio-Active Ceramide NP - The Breakthrough Ingredient

Traditional Ceramide NP sits in the outermost skin layers and reinforces the barrier surface. Bio-Active Ceramide NP has a shorter molecular chain length - which means it penetrates deeper, working through multiple skin layers to deliver active barrier repair and visible anti-ageing results from within.

This is the ingredient at the heart of both the Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser and the Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick. The same clinically proven ceramide. Two formulas - one built for the face, one built for the neck.

Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser - The Clinical Evidence

12-week independent clinical study (30 people):
Comparing Bio-Active Ceramide NP at 0.2% vs a placebo formulation:

  • Up to 4x visible fine line and wrinkle reduction vs standard ceramide formulations

4-week clinical study (20 people):

  • 100% saw a clinical improvement in 6 signs of ageing
  • 100% agree visibly flattened depth of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Clinically proven to firm, plump and visibly lift
  • Clinically proven to strengthen skin barrier from 1st use
  • Clinically proven 24-hour hydration

4-week consumer trial (70 people):

  • 91% agree no pilling under makeup
  • 88% agree smooth base for makeup

Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick - The Multi-Active Formula

Our Neck Lift Stick goes one step further by combining Bio-Active Ceramide NP with two additional anti-ageing actives in a single targeted formula:

  • Bio-Active Ceramide NP - multi-layer barrier repair and hydration, clinically proven to visibly reduce fine lines and neck lines

The integrated gua sha massager head is not a gimmick - it physically stimulates circulation and lymphatic drainage during application, enhancing absorption of the formula while providing the sculpting and lifting benefits of traditional gua sha technique, with none of the learning curve.

Gransil Blur X-11™ - The Instant Finish (Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser)

A specialist blurring ingredient that instantly softens the visible appearance of fine lines - delivering an immediate smoothing effect from the very first application, while the Bio-Active Ceramides work their longer-term transformation underneath.

Morning Ceramide Routine

  1. Oat Cleansing Balm - raspberry-sized amount on dry skin; emulsify with warm water and rinse. Ceramide-rich oat oil cleanses while protecting your barrier
  2. Hyaluronic Acid Serum - apply 2–3 drops to damp skin to draw moisture in
  3. Targeted serum - Vitamin C for brightening, Niacinamide Serum for pores and tone
  4. Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser - blueberry-sized amount to face, neck and décolletage; seals all previous layers, blurs fine lines
  5. Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick- glide upward across neck and décolletage; sweep along jawline; gua sha massager delivers and works the formula in
  6. Dewy Sunscreen SPF 30 - always the final step in the morning

Evening Ceramide Routine

  1. Oat Cleansing Balm - first cleanse; dissolves makeup and SPF in 30 seconds without stripping the barrier
  2. Second cleanse (optional) - water-based follow-up for a thorough double cleanse
  3. Hyaluronic Acid Serum - apply to damp skin
  4. Retinol Serum (if using on face) - apply before the moisturiser
  5. Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser - final face step; seals hydration, buffers actives, supports overnight barrier repair
  6. Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick - targeted neck treatment; retinol + ceramides + bakuchiol work overnight on neck lines and tech neck

Power Combinations That Work

Ceramides aren't a trend. They aren't a luxury. They're what your skin is literally built from - and when levels decline, everything you do in your skincare routine becomes less effective because the foundation it all sits on is compromised.

Restore your ceramides and you restore your barrier. Restore your barrier and you restore everything: hydration that lasts, skin that handles actives better, fine lines and neck lines that visibly soften, and a resilience that you'll feel from the very first use.

Start with our Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser at £19 - clinically proven to firm, plump and visibly reduce 6 signs of ageing in 28 days, with up to 4x the wrinkle reduction of standard ceramide formulations.

Add our Bio-Active Neck Lift Stick at £15 to take the same next-generation ceramide technology to your neck, jawline and décolletage - where ageing happens fastest and where most skincare routines stop too soon.

Complete the system with our Oat Cleansing Balm at £15 - because a barrier-first routine starts at step one, not step four.

Your skin knows what it needs. Now it has it - from face to décolletage.
