What a True Beta Hydroxy Acid Looks Like

Picture the textbook version first. A classic beta hydroxy acid has a straight, flexible chain of carbon atoms, what chemists call an aliphatic chain. Aliphatic simply means the carbons are arranged in an open chain rather than a closed ring. The acid group sits at one end. You count along that chain, one carbon for alpha, two carbons for beta, and the hydroxyl group is sitting there on the beta carbon.

The standard textbook example is beta hydroxybutanoic acid, sometimes written as 3-hydroxybutyric acid. Open chain, hydroxyl group on the second carbon along from the acid group, definition satisfied. That is what the term was coined to describe.

What Salicylic Acid Actually Is: 2-Hydroxybenzoic Acid

Salicylic acid is built differently. Its proper chemical name is 2-hydroxybenzoic acid, and that name is doing a lot of quiet work.

The “benzoic” part tells you the molecule is built around a benzene ring, a flat, closed, six carbon ring. Rings of this kind are described as aromatic, which in chemistry is a structural term about how the electrons in the ring are arranged, not a description of how something smells. So salicylic acid is not an open flexible chain at all. It is a rigid ring.

The “2-hydroxy” part tells you where the hydroxyl group sits: on the ring carbon immediately next door to the one carrying the acid group. Chemists call that neighbouring position the ortho position. Adjacent, side by side, as close as two groups on a benzene ring can be.

And there is the problem. There is no beta carbon on a benzene ring in the sense the definition requires, because you are not counting along an open chain. The hydroxyl group is not on a beta carbon of an aliphatic chain, it is on an aromatic ring. On a strict reading, salicylic acid is more accurately described as an aromatic phenolic acid, a phenol being the term for a hydroxyl group attached directly to a benzene ring.

Yu and Van Scott, whose work on hydroxy acids shaped much of the modern field, argued that salicylic acid is more correctly classified as a phenolic aromatic acid rather than a beta hydroxy acid. Neither side has ever conclusively won, and the two classifications have coexisted for decades.

Why the Industry and Regulators Still Classify It as a BHA

Because cosmetic classification is not organic chemistry taxonomy. Ingredients are grouped by how they behave on skin, how they are formulated, how they are regulated and how they are understood in practice. Salicylic acid carries both an acid group and a hydroxyl group, it exfoliates chemically, it is regulated and reviewed alongside the other hydroxy acids, and functionally it belongs in that conversation. Molecular geometry is one input into classification, not the only one.

According to PubChem’s entry for salicylic acid, it dissolves in water at only around 2.2 grams per litre at 25 degrees Celsius, while dissolving readily in oils and organic solvents. That is a molecule with a clear preference, and skin is a place where that preference matters enormously.

Think about what a pore actually contains. It is lined and filled with sebum, the oil your skin produces naturally.
