Combination skin is a skin type where different zones of your face behave differently, most commonly an oily or shiny T-zone across the forehead, nose and chin alongside cheeks that feel normal, comfortable or slightly dry. It is one of the most common skin types there is, and one of the most frustrating to shop for. You buy something mattifying for your forehead, and within a week your cheeks feel tight and stripped. You switch to something richer for your cheeks, and your nose is shining by 11am. If that pattern sounds familiar, you are in the right place.

Everything that follows depends on getting the skin type right, so identification comes first.
What Is Combination Skin?
Combination skin is characterised by different zones of the face producing different amounts of oil. That difference shows up in shine, in pore size and in how each area feels a few hours after cleansing. The classic pattern is an oily T-zone, meaning the forehead, nose and chin, paired with cheeks that sit somewhere between comfortable and slightly dry.
The word “combination” is doing precise work here. It does not mean your skin is confused or unpredictable. It means your face is not a single uniform surface, and it never was. Some regions of your skin simply have more oil-producing capacity than others.
That is the whole definition. What tends to complicate it is that most skincare marketing is built around a single-need model: one product for oily skin, one for dry. Combination skin sits awkwardly across that divide, which is why so many people with it end up with a bathroom shelf full of half-used products that each solved one zone and worsened another.
What does combination skin look like?
If you are trying to work out what combination skin looks like on a real face, these are the markers to look for.
- Visible shine on the forehead and around the nose within a few hours of cleansing. Not immediately, but noticeably by midday.
- More noticeable pores across the T-zone. Pores often appear larger down the centre of the face, particularly either side of the nose.
- Smaller, less visible pores on the cheeks. The contrast between the two areas is one of the clearest signals.
- Occasional blackheads or congestion concentrated on the nose and chin. Rarely spread evenly across the whole face.
- Cheeks that can look flat, dull or slightly flaky by contrast. Especially in colder months, or after using a product designed for oily skin across the whole face.
- Makeup that behaves differently in different places. Foundation slipping on the nose while clinging to dry patches on the cheeks is a very common giveaway.
If several of those describe your face, you are almost certainly looking at combination skin.
It is a skin type, not a skin concern
This distinction matters more than almost anything else in this guide, so it is worth slowing down for.
A skin concern is something that happens to your skin: dehydration, redness, breakouts, a compromised barrier. Concerns come and go. They are usually triggered by something identifiable, such as a harsh product, a change in climate, stress, or a period of over-exfoliating.
A skin type is your baseline. It is the structural, largely genetic tendency your skin returns to when nothing unusual is happening. Combination skin is a type. It is not a reaction to a bad moisturiser, and it is not something that appeared because you used the wrong cleanser last winter.
That reframe changes your entire approach. You are not repairing damage or correcting a mistake. You are managing a natural tendency, in the same way someone with naturally curly hair works with the curl instead of fighting it every morning. The routine that works is the one built around the tendency, not the one designed to override it.
It also means you can stop looking for the product that will finally “sort it out”. There isn’t one, because there is nothing to sort out. There is a pattern to accommodate, and accommodating it well is genuinely straightforward once you know how.
Combination skin sits on a spectrum
There is no single uniform presentation of combination skin, and this is where a lot of readers get stuck when they compare themselves to a textbook description.
For some people, the oiliness is concentrated almost entirely on the nose, with the forehead behaving much like the cheeks. For others, the forehead is the shiniest zone and the nose is relatively calm. Dry patches do not always land on the cheeks either. Plenty of people find them around the mouth, along the jaw, or at the outer edges of the face near the hairline.
The T-zone itself is a useful shorthand rather than a strict map. Think of it as a starting hypothesis you then adjust based on what your own face is actually doing.
The intensity varies too. Mild combination skin might mean a faint sheen on the nose by late afternoon and cheeks that occasionally feel a bit tight. Pronounced combination skin might mean a genuinely oily central panel with regular congestion, sitting next to cheeks that flake in January. Both are combination skin. They just need slightly different dials turned.
T-zone congestion and blackheads are a common part of the picture for a lot of people with this skin type, largely because the areas producing the most oil are also the areas where pores are most likely to become blocked. How to Tell If You Have Combination Skin: Two At-Home Tests
Reading a description and recognising yourself in it is a good start. Confirming it with an actual test is better, because self-diagnosis based on how your skin feels at a random moment in the day is notoriously unreliable. Skin that has just been through a hot shower, a windy commute or a heavy moisturiser is not telling you anything useful about its baseline.
Both of these tests are free, take under an hour, and require nothing you do not already own.
The bare-face test
This is the most reliable at-home method for identifying any skin type, and it works because it removes every variable except your skin itself.
- Cleanse with a gentle cleanser. Nothing harsh, nothing foaming and stripping, nothing with a scrub in it. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a clean towel.
- Apply absolutely nothing afterwards. No serum, no moisturiser, no SPF, no facial oil. This is the step people cheat on, and it invalidates the result.
- Wait 30 minutes. Do not touch your face during this time. Touching transfers oil from your hands and redistributes sebum across zones.
- Observe four zones in natural light. Stand near a window rather than under a bathroom light, which flattens shine and hides detail. Look separately at your forehead, your nose, your cheeks and your chin.
Now read the result.
If your T-zone looks shiny or feels slick while your cheeks feel normal and comfortable, or slightly tight and dry, that is combination skin. If every zone including your cheeks is shining, you are looking at oily skin. If everything feels tight and nothing shines, that points to dry skin. If nothing much is happening anywhere, that is normal skin, and you should probably not be reading a combination skin guide.
Best time to do it: mid-morning at the weekend, when you are not rushing and can genuinely leave your face alone for half an hour.
The blotting paper method
Faster, and useful as a second opinion if the bare-face test left you undecided.
Press one sheet of blotting paper firmly to your T-zone, holding it for a few seconds across the forehead and nose. Then take a separate, fresh sheet and press it to one cheek. Hold both up to the light and compare.

Do this a few hours after cleansing rather than straight afterwards. Immediately post-cleanse, nobody’s blotting paper will show much of anything.
Dry combination or oily combination?
Here is the refinement that most guides skip, and it is the one that will save you the most money.
Combination skin splits into two broad sub-patterns, and knowing which camp you fall into determines your cleanser and moisturiser choice more than any other single decision you will make.
Oily combination skin means a markedly oily T-zone, visible pores across the centre of the face, frequent congestion or blackheads, and cheeks that sit comfortably in the normal range rather than feeling dry. Shine appears within two or three hours of cleansing. Your routine leans towards the 2% Salicylic Acid Face Wash and a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser like the Omega Water Cream.
Dry combination skin means a moderately shiny T-zone, but cheeks that genuinely feel tight after cleansing, look dull, or flake, particularly in winter. The oil is there, but it is confined to a narrower band and the rest of the face needs real support. Your routine leans towards the gentler Fulvic Acid Cleanser and a more substantial Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser on the cheeks.
If you get this call right, everything downstream becomes easier. If you get it wrong, you will spend months wondering why a perfectly good routine is making one half of your face unhappy.
One quick caveat worth flagging. Tight, dull cheeks are not always dry cheeks. Skin that lacks water rather than oil is dehydrated, which is a concern rather than a type and can affect any skin type including oily ones. Why your skin seems to change with the seasons
A question we get constantly: “My skin was oily all summer and now it is dry, has my skin type changed?”
Almost certainly not. What has changed is the environment acting on it.
Summer heat and humidity increase sebum production, so the T-zone looks and feels shinier. Higher temperatures make the sebaceous glands more active, and humid air slows the evaporation of oil from the skin’s surface, so it sits there looking glossier for longer.
Winter does the opposite in the areas that were already drier. Cold outdoor air holds less moisture, central heating strips humidity from indoor air, and the two together pull water out of the skin. Your cheeks feel tighter and flakier while your T-zone quietly carries on producing oil, sometimes making the contrast between zones more dramatic in winter than in summer.
These shifts are a feature of combination skin, not evidence your skin type has changed. Your sebaceous gland distribution has not rearranged itself because it got cold. What has changed is how intensely the underlying pattern presents itself, which is why the seasonal adjustments later in this guide are about turning dials rather than rebuilding routines.

What Causes Combination Skin (and How It Differs From Oily Skin)
Understanding the mechanism behind combination skin is not academic. It is what makes the product recommendations later in this guide feel earned rather than asserted, and it is what stops you from making the classic mistakes that come from misunderstanding what oil actually is.
There are four main drivers, and they stack.
Genetics: the primary driver
Sebaceous glands, the tiny structures in your skin that produce sebum, are not distributed evenly across the face. Nobody’s are. The density is naturally higher in the central panel of the face and lower towards the outer cheeks.
What varies from person to person is how pronounced that difference is. People with combination skin tend to have a notably higher concentration and activity level of sebaceous glands in the T-zone compared with the cheek area. That structural difference is the root cause of zonal oil imbalance. It is written into how your skin is built.
Let us be plain about what that means. You did not cause this. It is not the result of something you ate, a cleanser you used at seventeen, or a lack of discipline. And you cannot eliminate it, because you cannot rewrite the density of your sebaceous glands.
The good news is that combination skin responds extremely well to management. The gap between a badly managed combination routine and a well managed one is enormous, and closing it takes weeks, not years.
Hormones
Androgen hormones stimulate sebaceous gland activity and regulate how much sebum those glands produce. This is the mechanism behind almost every oil-related change your skin goes through in your life.
Puberty is the most obvious example, when rising androgen levels turn previously unremarkable skin into something considerably shinier. But the influence does not stop there. The menstrual cycle produces predictable fluctuations, which is why many people notice their T-zone is oilier and more congested at particular points in the month. Pregnancy shifts the hormonal picture substantially. Perimenopause and menopause tend to move things in the other direction as oil production declines. Certain contraceptives change the balance again.
This is why combination skin feels more or less pronounced at different life stages, and why the routine that suited you at twenty-two might feel too stripping at thirty-eight. It is not that the products stopped working. The skin producing the oil changed.
Environment
External conditions do not create combination skin, but they absolutely amplify or soften how it shows up.
High humidity increases sebum production and keeps oil sitting on the surface, amplifying T-zone shine. Anyone who has taken combination skin somewhere tropical will recognise this immediately.
Cold, dry air combined with central heating reduces the skin’s moisture content, which is what makes cheeks feel tight and papery in winter. The moisture is being pulled out of the skin faster than it is being replaced.
Pollution and UV exposure affect barrier function over time. A weakened barrier loses water more readily, which worsens the dryness experience in your less oily zones while doing nothing helpful for the oily ones.
None of these factors change your skin type. They change its intensity, which is a different thing entirely, and a much easier thing to work with.
Product habits that make it worse
This is the category you have most control over, and the one where most people are unknowingly working against themselves.
Over-cleansing and harsh, stripping cleansers. This is the big one. Aggressive cleansers strip away natural oils, and skin responds to being stripped by producing more oil to compensate. The result is a T-zone that gets oilier as a direct consequence of your efforts to make it less oily. It is a genuine feedback loop, and it catches out an enormous number of people who assume that more cleansing must mean less oil.
Heavy occlusive moisturisers across the whole face. Rich, waxy formulas that suit dry skin beautifully will sit on an oily T-zone and contribute to congestion. Over-exfoliating. Exfoliating acids are genuinely useful for combination skin, but frequency matters enormously. Daily use disrupts the skin barrier, which worsens dryness in your drier zones and can trigger reactive oiliness in the T-zone. You end up with both problems at once.

Combination skin vs oily skin
This is the single most common point of confusion in skin type identification, and getting it wrong sends people down entirely the wrong product route.
The core distinction is simple. With oily skin, the entire face overproduces sebum, cheeks included. With combination skin, the oil production is zonal, concentrated in the T-zone while other areas behave differently.
Three quick signals will tell you which you are looking at.
The bare-face test result on the cheeks specifically. Forget the T-zone for a moment, since both types will produce shine there. The cheeks are the deciding factor. Shiny cheeks after 30 bare minutes means oily skin. Comfortable or tight cheeks means combination.
Pore size distribution. Oily skin typically shows enlarged pores across the whole face, including the cheeks and towards the jaw. Combination skin shows them concentrated in the T-zone with visibly finer pores elsewhere.
How each type responds to moisturiser. Oily skin tends to find nearly all moisturisers too heavy, whatever the zone. Combination skin usually finds lightweight formulas perfectly comfortable on the T-zone but occasionally insufficient on the cheeks, particularly in winter. That mismatch is diagnostic in itself.

Which brings us to the principle that carries into everything that follows. Combination skin does not need two entirely separate routines, one for each half of your face. Most steps use the same product across the whole face. What changes is how much you apply, where you apply it, and where you place targeted treatments. The governing principle of a good skincare routine for combination skin is balance. Not compromise, not splitting the difference, but genuine balance.
That means resisting two opposite temptations. The first is trying to strip the T-zone into submission with the strongest oil-control products you can find, which reliably backfires through compensatory sebum production. The second is piling hydration onto dry cheeks with rich creams that then migrate across the T-zone and congest it.
What actually works is less dramatic and considerably more effective: lightweight, multi-tasking formulas used across the whole face, with targeted treatments placed strategically where each zone needs them.
The real key with combination skin is adjusting how you apply, not always what you apply. A lighter hand on the cheeks with exfoliating toners, and a slightly heavier application over the T-zone with oil-controlling treatments, makes a significant difference.
Zone-specific application: the four rules
Before the step-by-step, internalise these four rules. They apply to every routine below and to any routine you build yourself in future.
- Hydrating serums go across the whole face. Every zone benefits from water. There is no such thing as a zone too oily for hydration.
- Oil-controlling treatments go more generously on the T-zone, and lighter or skipped entirely on the cheeks on days when they feel sensitive.
- Moisturiser goes across the whole face, in a formula light enough for the T-zone but adequate for the cheeks. Where the gap between zones is large, use two textures rather than compromising with one that suits neither.
- SPF goes across the whole face, every morning, without exception. No zonal logic applies here at all.
The AM routine
Five steps. Under five minutes once you have the rhythm.
Step 1: Cleanse. Your cleanser choice is the most consequential decision in the routine, which is why we spent time on the dry versus oily combination distinction earlier.

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which means it draws water into the skin rather than adding oil to it. That distinction is exactly why it works so well across every zone at once. Damp application matters. Humectants draw moisture from whatever is available, so applying to a damp face gives them something to work with.

Niacinamide is arguably the single most useful ingredient for this skin type. The PM routine
Six steps, and this is where the more active work happens.
Step 1: First cleanse. Apply the Oat Cleansing Balm (£15) to dry skin, massaging for around 30 seconds to melt makeup, SPF and the day’s accumulated grime. Add water to emulsify, then rinse.
Oil-based first cleansing sounds counterintuitive for an oily T-zone, but it is exactly right. Oil dissolves oil, along with the silicones and film-formers in sunscreen that water-based cleansers struggle to shift. Step 2: Second cleanse. Follow with the 2% Salicylic Acid Face Wash (£14) or the Fulvic Acid Cleanser (£13), using the same logic as the morning. The first cleanse removed what was sitting on your skin. The second cleanses the skin itself.
Step 3: Exfoliate, two to three times per week only. Apply the Glycolic Acid Toner (£14) to a cotton pad, sweeping it across the T-zone with focus and over the cheeks with a distinctly lighter hand.
Please read the frequency instruction as an instruction rather than a suggestion. Daily use of an AHA toner compromises the barrier of your drier zones, and a compromised barrier makes every other problem worse. In winter, reduce to once weekly. If your cheeks are feeling reactive, skip the cheeks entirely and treat the T-zone only.
Step 4: Hydrate. Hyaluronic Acid Serum (£12) on damp skin, as in the morning. This step matters even more after exfoliating.

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, which is the property that makes it different from every other exfoliating acid. Because it dissolves in oil, it can travel into the pore lining and work on congestion at its source rather than only clearing the surface. That makes it ideal for T-zone blackheads and blocked pores.
For combination skin specifically, using it in a face wash format rather than a leave-on treatment is the smarter approach. Glycolic Acid (AHA)
Where salicylic acid works inside the pore, glycolic acid works on the surface, loosening the bonds that hold dead skin cells together so they shed more readily. For combination skin, that addresses two problems in one pass: surface build-up on the T-zone and dullness on the cheeks.
