WHAT IS ACNE AND WHAT CAN CAUSE ACNE? Acne is a common skin condition where the pores of the skin become blocked/clogged resulting in different symptoms. Pore blockages produce blackheads, whiteheads and other types of pimples and clogged hair follicles or pores cause acne (hair follicles are small tubes that hold a strand of our hair). There are several glands that empty into our hair follicles and when too much material is inside the hair follicle, a clog occurs.
WHAT ACTUALLY CAUSES PORES TO CLOG?
Sebum: a sticky oily substance the body produces in order to keep the skin moisturized and protect the skin barrier. It's made up of a collection of fat molecules, waxes, and squalene.
Bacteria: Small amounts of bacteria which naturally live on the skin. If we have too many bacteria, it can clog our pores.
Dead skin cells: Our skin cells shed often to make room for more cells to grow. When our skin releases dead skin cells, they can get stuck in our hair follicles.
WHY SHOULD PEOPLE WITH BREAKOUTS USE A MOISTURISER? When the skin becomes dry, our body produces more oil. The extra oil can clog pores, which may lead to more breakouts. The right moisturiser can prevent the skin from becoming dry and uncomfortable and it can also help to clear breakouts and prevent new ones.
