Bakuchiol is one of the most talked-about ingredients in skincare right now - a plant-derived, gentle alternative to retinol that has earned genuine attention from sensitive skin types, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and anyone who has felt put off by traditional vitamin A derivatives. It deserves its reputation. But if you have landed here looking for a bakuchiol product from INKEY, here is what you need to know: we do not currently make one. What we do make are some of the most effective, best-tolerated anti-ageing serums and moisturisers available - and if your goal is smoother skin, fewer fine lines, and a more even complexion, we can help you find the right fit.

What it does

A plant-derived compound extracted from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia (babchi) plant

What it does

Mimics the skin-renewing effects of retinol - reducing fine lines, supporting collagen production, and evening skin tone - without the irritation

Best for

Sensitive skin types, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, retinol beginners, and menopausal skin

When to use

AM and/or PM - unlike retinol, bakuchiol can be used in the morning or evening

Pairs well with

Hyaluronic Acid, Niacinamide, Peptides, Ceramides

Does INKEY sell this?

We do not currently stock a Bakuchiol product. Our Starter Retinol, Advanced 0.2% Retinal, and Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser are built to deliver the same anti-ageing goals

Bakuchiol (pronounced ba-KOO-chee-ol - however you spell it, whether that is bakuchoil, backuchiol, or bacuchiol, it is all the same ingredient) is a naturally occurring meroterpene phenol found in the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia plant, also known as the babchi plant. It has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, and has more recently become one of skincare's most compelling active ingredients.

What makes bakuchiol genuinely interesting is not that it is "natural" - it is that it produces a retinol-like response in the skin through an entirely different chemical mechanism. Unlike retinol, which belongs to the vitamin A family and converts to retinoic acid in the skin, bakuchiol is a structurally distinct molecule. Yet research suggests it activates some of the same gene pathways as retinoids, which is why its effects on the skin look so similar: improved skin texture, reduced fine lines, more even tone, and better collagen support.

The landmark clinical study published in the British Journal of Dermatology in 2018 compared bakuchiol directly with 0.5% retinol over 12 weeks. The conclusion: bakuchiol performed comparably to retinol in reducing wrinkles and hyperpigmentation - with significantly fewer side effects.

Smooths Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Bakuchiol stimulates collagen production and encourages cell renewal through its retinol-like gene expression activity, which translates into a gradual reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over consistent use. The 2018 British Journal of Dermatology study demonstrated this effect directly, with results comparable to retinol over a 12-week period.

Evens Skin Tone and Targets Dark Spots

Bakuchiol's anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties help reduce the appearance of pigmentation, post-blemish marks, and uneven tone over time.

Gentle Anti-Ageing for Sensitive and Menopausal Skin

As skin becomes thinner, more reactive, and more prone to barrier disruption - particularly during menopause - bakuchiol provides a retinol-like anti-ageing effect without the adjustment period or the risk of increased sensitivity.

Pregnancy-Safe Anti-Ageing

Retinol is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Bakuchiol is widely regarded as safe for use during this time. As always, we recommend consulting your midwife or GP before making any changes to your skincare routine during pregnancy.

Antioxidant Protection

Unlike retinol, bakuchiol has intrinsic antioxidant properties, helping neutralise the free radical damage that contributes to premature skin ageing.

The Honest Verdict

Bakuchiol is an excellent option for anyone who cannot or does not want to use retinol - particularly during pregnancy, or for very reactive skin types. For everyone else, the clinical evidence places retinol and retinal ahead of bakuchiol in terms of speed and depth of anti-ageing results. At INKEY, we have formulated our retinol range specifically to close that tolerability gap.

Woman holding retinol

You are not sure where to startTake our Skincare Quiz

1. Clinical Evidence — Understand how much evidence exists: how many studies, over how long, in how many participants. Retinol has one of the strongest evidence bases of any skincare ingredient. Bakuchiol is genuinely promising, with growing research behind it.

2. Delivery Technology — Encapsulation technology makes retinol more stable, better tolerated, and more effective. INKEY uses it across both the Starter Retinol and Advanced 0.2% Retinal.

3. Irritation Profile and Supporting Ingredients — Look for calming complexes (SymRelief in the Starter Retinol, SymSitive 1609 in the Advanced 0.2% Retinal), barrier-supporting lipids (Amisol Trio), and hydrating ingredients such as Squalane and Hyaluronic Acid.

4. Realistic Expectations on Timing — All anti-ageing actives require consistent use over several weeks. Our Starter Retinol shows visible improvement from 7 days; our Advanced 0.2% Retinal delivers visible wrinkle reduction in 1 week — both backed by clinical testing.

  • Bakuchiol is flexible — use it morning or evening. No photosensitivity increase means it fits comfortably into either routine.
  • Apply after cleansing, before moisturiser. Allow it to absorb, then follow with your moisturiser.
  • Be patient — results build over time. Most people see meaningful improvement between 8 and 12 weeks of consistent daily use.
  • You do not have to choose bakuchiol or retinol forever. Our Starter Retinol is designed to be that first retinol step — formulated to be as gentle as possible while still being clinically effective.
  • Common mistake: Expecting bakuchiol to work as fast as retinol. If results are slow and there is no medical reason to avoid retinol, it may be worth making the switch.
  • INKEY tip: If you have menopausal or reactive skin, start with Starter Retinol 2 to 3 nights per week and pair with the Bio-Active Ceramide Moisturiser to support your barrier.

Bakuchiol is a naturally occurring plant compound extracted from the seeds and leaves of the Psoralea corylifolia (babchi) plant. It is widely described as a natural alternative to retinol because it activates similar gene pathways in the skin - producing comparable anti-ageing effects, including reduced fine lines, improved skin tone, and better collagen support - without being a retinoid.
